Chapter 11

Nissa worked through the remainder of the afternoon, testing the feeds from her remote cloning devices. She hooked her laptop to Peter’s computer and she borrowed Cole’s desktop computer in the loft to monitor Stan’s. She set the two up side by side. And now it was a waiting game to see who each man contacted electronically and what they said.

Cole cooked something downstairs that smelled Italian and delicious while she dug into the data from the twins’ hard drives. Most of it was innocuous, but she isolated a series of emails from each man that might be using a code of some kind to disguise the true meaning of their messages. She started listing words that didn’t quite seem to be the right word in sentences, and sure enough, the two lists from each man had more overlap than could be coincidence.

The next task would be to track down the recipients of the coded emails, particularly the recipients in the week prior to the hurricane’s arrival, after the criminal side of Petrov’s organization had been taken down. If the recipients worked for Petrov, they could only be members of his spy ring or perhaps a few members of his crime ring that the big FBI sting had failed to net.

And if she got lucky, one of the recipients was Markus Petrov, himself.

“Dinner’s ready!” Cole called up to her.

She went downstairs to a pan of the best-tasting lasagna she’d ever had, and a salad. Her appetite was sharp after the day’s running around, and she dug in with gusto. Afterward she helped wash the dishes and tidy the kitchen, and then Cole went outside to turn off the generator for a few hours. He’d rigged the computers to recharge whenever the generator kicked on automatically to cool the refrigerator and freezer. That way her monitoring of the twins’ computers would be continuous.

She moved into the living room and had just sat down on the sofa when the lights went out and plunged the house into darkness. She didn’t hear Cole come inside, but all of a sudden, a shadow moved in front of the window and she jumped about a foot in the air. “Dang, you’re quiet!”

“I should hope so. My life routinely depends on it.”

“Right. I forgot for a second.” When she was in his home with him like this, watching him do domestic things like cooking and washing, it was easy to see him as a regular guy and not the trained killer that he was.

She watched with interest as he lit several pillar candles on the tables and shelves around the room. A soft, freakishly romantic glow filled the room. The entire evening stretched before them. How were they going to pass the time? It wasn’t like they could watch a movie on TV. It was only the two of them, together.

And, just like that, her heart was racing again, and acute awareness of him as an insanely hot man made her jumpy as all get-out.
